Poor management skills plunge civil servants into financial crisis – minister


Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Ms. Zainab Ahmed, says lack of money management skills is causing financial crisis among civil servants, urging them to manage, save and invest money .

A statement signed by the ministry’s director of information/press, Phil Abiamuwe-Mowete, said the finance minister, who was represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Aliyu Ahmed, noted this during the Service-Wide Financial Education Flag Ceremony in the Work Place Program on Financial Inclusion, Abuja.

The statement reads in part as follows: “The Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, said that the lack of primary skills on how to manage, save and invest l Money was one of the reasons why public employees experience financial problems as most civil servants do not cultivate a habit of effective savings, but spend more than they earn.

The minister said there is a program for ministries, departments and agencies involving financial literacy training for 12,000 government employees by December 2022.

In his welcoming address, Permanent Secretary for Special Duties Shehu Shinkafi said most public sector employees earn to consume largely due to a lack of financial literacy.
