The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGoF), Surv. Abuduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin expressed the importance of conflict management skills for surveyors in the country given the complex nature of their tasks.

Surv. Adebomehin expressed this recently in his office at Survey House, Abuja, while receiving a team from the National Peace Academy (NPA) of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR). , an agency under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headed by the director of the academy, Dr. Bosede Awodola.

The SGoF said that surveyors would usually face some reluctant people from communities during demarcation works in border areas of internal and international borders, noting that communication that would engender peace and mutual understanding remains relevant for surveyors.

He therefore pledged to ensure collaboration with the IPCR for the training of surveyors and other staff of the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGoF) at the Institute’s Peace Academy. He said he would immediately activate the process of training the officials of the Department of the internal border and those of the international border in management, resolution and negotiation of conflicts.

The work of OSGoF according to Surv. Adebomehin was to help determine the boundaries and as such the surveyors are in contact with community members from time to time. According to him, making peace and establishing good relations between border communities remains a major concern of OSGoF.

Previously, the director of the academy, Dr. Awodola, appreciated the mandates of OSGoF, an extra-ministerial office of the federal government which she described as separate and central to real development.

She assured the SGoF that the academy has the capacity to provide customized trainings according to the different mandates of MDAs. Dr. Awodola mentioned that the IPCR engaged in research, delivery of interventions and capacity building in the areas of peace, conflict management and resolution as well as policy advice.

Dr. Awodola revealed that the academy also liaises with the National Boundary Commission (NBC), particularly in building conflict management capacity for its staff.
