In the latest major agency outing, WME Partner Phillip Sun joins forces with MACRO Founder and CEO Charles D. King to form M88, a full-service representation company that amplifies artists’ voices and the creators of the New Global Majority, which Sun will lead as chairman and managing partner.

The new management company will be majority-owned by cross-platform media company MACRO, with the M standing for MACRO and the 88 a nod to Sun’s Chinese heritage. MACRO Management, recently launched by King, which represents filmmakers, actors, writers and multi-cuts, will merge its activities with the company. Former Paradigm film agent Gaby Mena and former CAA representative Jelani Johnson were recruited under the new vertical representation in January.

It’s a reunion for Sun and King, who first worked together at the William Morris agency in 2007. “Charles was a strong advocate and pioneer of storytelling and multicultural storytellers first as a agent / partner at WME and now as founder and CEO of MACRO. He is a unique force in the industry, and someone I deeply admire as a colleague and close confidant, ”Sun said. “Given our aligned values and our shared history, this partnership is a natural evolution and a necessary step. “

King, who launched MACRO with the goal of representing the voices and perspectives of people of color in 2015, has produced some of Hollywood’s most successful films in recent years, including Mudbound, sorry to bother you, just mercy and the next one Judas and the Black Messiah. The company is backed by a range of investors, including Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective.

“I’m really excited to be working directly with Phil again and starting this new business together,” King adds. “His keen sense of talent, his passion and his advocacy for artists and authenticity and his prowess at making deals are undeniable. In addition, he is an exceptional executive and leader who aligns completely with MACRO’s mission and values in life and practice. We look forward to growing and building with him.

Michael B. Jordan will be Sun’s first customer to join M88. Together, Sun and Jordan created the Jordanian production company, Outlier Society, which currently has prominent deals with Warner Bros. for cinema and Amazon Studios for television. Jordan will also continue to be replaced at WME. Other Sun clients are also expected to join him in the new management company, while continuing to be represented by WME.

Sun’s work has often focused on supporting and strengthening inclusion and diversity in Hollywood. He worked with client Jordan and WarnerMedia to help the company craft its groundbreaking inclusion policy, the first of its kind for a studio.

To WME, Sun, who appeared on both THRThe Next Gen and Empowerment lists, have risen through the ranks as one of the most prolific agents in the industry. Her diverse client list includes Jordan, Idris Elba, Riz Ahmed, Donald Glover, Gemma Chan, Lena Waithe, Rihanna and Naomi Scott. “I am grateful to WME, especially Patrick Whitesell and Ari Greenburg, for the unparalleled training and mentorship that has been provided to me during my 15 year career there. I look forward to continuing our work together in this new capacity, ”Sun said.

Sun was one of the first Asian American agents to be promoted to WME Partner, and used his platform to push for change internally by co-founding Empower, WME’s company-wide program. which ensures that employees at all levels feel supported as they progress throughout the agency – and externally as a board member of the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.

“Our industry needs companies like M88 more than ever, and we couldn’t be more proud that Phil is taking this step,” said Patrick Whitesell, Executive Chairman of Endeavor. “He is an incredible advocate for artists and we wish him all the best in his next chapter.”

Sun’s departure comes amid a string of major agency releases, including those due to the recent launch of a new management and production company by Peter Micelli, a former CAA television agent who recruited CAA, WME and UTA agents in his new business.
